I have to admit that when I found out about Selena it wasn't until after she died. The day she died I really cried for not knowing who she was, telling her in heaven that I am sorry that I barely found out about her.
That really happened, I am not just writing for dramatic effect. I went out and bought Amor Prohibido and listened to the album and loved every song on it.
Now let me share with you how Selena has influenced me. Since I was four years old I wanted to be a singer because singing set me free and put smiles on peoples faces. Growing up I wanted to sing in English and never liked Spanish music or spoke Spanish. But when I started learning more about Selena I started accepting my culture and accepting who I was. I am proud to be a Mexican-American and I decided to sing in Spanish. I started practicing my Spanish by learning Selena's songs. Selena taught me that my dream of being a singer can really happen, that its not impossible. Selena started out in the music business struggling but she kept on going and worked very hard. That is another thing that Selena has taught me, to work hard at what I am doing. Another thing that Selena has taught me is to not let fame get to my head -- that no matter how big of a star I may become, to always remember where I came from and to never forget those who were around me from the very beginning.
I admire Selena for who she was as a person and as a celebrity. Some say, I wanna be like Mike [Michael Jordan, former NBA star with the Chicago Bulls] but you all hear me say, I wanna be like Selena. |
